China has not rid itself of the plague that nearly wiped out medieval Europe. As recent as 2009, China imposed a quarantine around a remote village in northwestern China that was hit by pneumonic plague. Three villages were killed by the highly contagious disease around Ziketan Town in Qinghai province. Authorities lifted the ban after no new cases were reported for over a week. This air-borne disease breaks out from time to time in China, according to the World Health Organization.
