The monasteries are open to tourists

These Monasteries Are On Top Of A Rock Pillar, But The View Is Breathtaking (5 Photos)

In Thessaly Greece, 370 metres into the air, sits The Meteora. The Meteroa, or “in the heavens above,” is a set of sandstone pillars home to many ancient monasteries. Instead of just building the monasteries on top of the pillars, most of the buildings are carved into the pillars themselves – it’s as if they wanted to make the location even harder to build and get to. But despite the challenges the building process brought, the result is absolutely beautiful. It comes, then, as no surprise to find The Meteora mentioned on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
